Home to the oldest university in the world; for centuries the second capital of the Papal State after Rome; famous for its excellent “fat” cuisine tradition, Bologna is today a unique and fascinating city which still preserves treasures from its glourios past.

Half a day in Bologna (max 3 hours)

The classic half day tour starts at Piazza Maggiore with its main buildings, such as: the City Hall, the Podestà Palace and the amazing Basilica of the Holy Petronio (inside), one of the biggest churches in the world for christians; then you will admire Neptune’s Fountain, King Enzo’s Palace and the Sala Borsa (inside), where you can still walk upon ruins of an old roman basilica. 

The tour will continue with a visit at the Archiginnasio Palace, first stable seat of the University of Bologna (inside), the oldest in the western world, with its famous Anatomy Theatre; and going through the historical Food Market You will reach the gothic Merchants’ Palace and the Two Towers, real symbol together with the Neptune of this city. Then Finally, Steven’s Church, better known as the Seven Churches (inside according to opening hours). 

During the historical and artistical tour Your guide will tell You many romantic legends and amusing anecdotes, and also reveal You the true origin and significance of the many different nicknames given to Bologna through the centuries, such as: the “red”, the “town with many towers”, the “learned” and… last but not least the “fat”.

A whole day in Bologna (max 6 hours)

To fully appreciate the splendours of Bolognese art and history you may like to visit other places besides the ones indicated above. 
You may choose between a series of alternatives:

  • Isolani Court with its old wooden arcade (portico in Italian), one of the almost fourty kilometers going through the city centre; 
  • San Domenico Church that conserves inside the monumetal Sarcophagus of San Domenico, the saint who founded the Domenican Order; 
  • Via Zamboni, the heart of the University area with some of it’s interesting buildings, among others: Oratory of Santa Cecilia, the Church of S. Giacomo Maggiore, the University Museums, the Church of Santa Maria della Vita that hosts the renaissaince sculptural group in terracotta made by Nicoḷ dell’Arca; 
  • The Ghetto and the window that gives on the canal in Via Piella.
